Cadillac’s line of V-badged cars is essentially America’s answer to models from the likes of BMW M, Mercedes-Benz AMG and Audi quattro. In some respects the Cadillacs are better and in others, they aren’t.
But there’s one area the Cadillacs can’t be beat in the luxury performance segment, and that’s bang for your buck.
With a starting price of $63,215, the Cadillac CTS-V, the only V model currently in Cadillac’s lineup though it comes in sedan, coupe and wagon bodystyles, isn’t exactly cheap. However, when you consider that it comes with a supercharged V-8 dishing out 556 horsepower and 551 pound-feet of torque, a powerplant that will make many supercars jealous, you'll quickly start to realize just how much performance per dollar you’re getting.
Either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic can be equipped, but we’d stick with the manual due to the sheer fun you’ll have making the most of that V-8 engine. Around town the CTS-V feels smooth and docile. However, drop the hammer and it’s like unleashing hell. Zero to 60 passes in less than four seconds and top speed should be close to 200 mph though we weren’t brave enough to test it.
If you rarely ever have more than one passenger we’d definitely go with the CTS-V Coupe, simply because of the style and presence the vehicle offers. Its platform was introduced when its current octogenarian owners were mere quinquagenarians; in plain English, this means that the DTS underpinnings could be traced back some 30 years. Rather than replace it with a BMW-chasing, rear-drive four-door of the sort that enthusiasts demand and shoppers would probably overlook, it will instead be succeeded at the top of the Cadillac sedan range with the XTS, a sensible car built on the company’s Premium Epsilon platform. (A rear-driver has been rumored, however.) Is the XTS a grandpamobile? Sure—so long as your grandfather is a computer geek.
A Few Words on the Car. Cadillac didn’t bother to spend much time talking about the car itself. The XTS is based on the same platform that underpins the Buick LaCrosse, and mechanically, much is the same here. The wheelbase and front and rear tracks are identical between the two cars, even if the Caddy is a full five inches longer overall. “Big” is a theme for the XTS: with 18 cubic feet, Cadillac says it has more trunk space than the Audi A8L, BMW 7-series, or Mercedes-Benz S-class. The 2011 CTS is, in some eyes, the most distinctive of all the vehicles in this set; and with the addition of a flashy new CTS Coupe for 2011, the lineup has an even stronger style statement. Just as in the CTS sedan, we like the sparing use of chrome in the Cadillac grille, and the contrast between gray plastic and chrome vertical accents with the chrome Cadillac wreath. And the swept-up-and-back headlamps are still almost mesmerizing in their detail. And there's a great contrast in the way the plentiful fine details in front and in back volley with the deliciously neat and uncluttered side profile. Sharply folded edges, a chunky stance, and lots of chrome details give the sedan a stubby, sporting look, while we like the V-shaped trunk and tailgate detail in the Wagon and Coupe. There's a subtle motion along the body that emphasizes, rather than subdues, the big rear end. If you're no fan of Cadillac's "Art & Science" styling theme, it doesn't get any softer with the added wagon back.
The interior design is attractive, but it might not suit everyone's tastes, especially those used to the Teutonic design approach of less is more. The 306-horsepower, 3.6-liter direct-injected six-cylinder is eager to please, handled respectably by the six-speed automatic transmission, and offers plenty of oomph for freeway maneuvers. The six-speed manual available in the sedan isn't an option, but GM's six-speed automatic, with paddle shifters and sweet gear changes, does all the teamwork to combine the power with either rear- or optional all-wheel drive. That which is great can still be improved upon, and so it is with the 2012 Cadillac CTS, which gets 14 additional horsepower from its top-spec V-6 and some small styling and equipment changes.
The revised direct-injection 3.6-liter V-6 now puts out 318 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque, thanks mostly to intake changes, including larger valves, revised ports, and a tweaked camshaft that keeps the intake valves open longer. (The same engine makes 323 hp in the updated 2012 Chevrolet Camaro.) Compared to last year’s 3.6-liter V-6, this year’s iteration is nearly 21 pounds lighter; 13 pounds were saved by integrating the heads and exhaust manifolds, 2 pounds from a lighter-weight front accessory-drive cover and new connecting rods, and 5.5 came out from using a plastic intake manifold in place of last year’s aluminum piece. The base 270-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 carries over unchanged, and can still be mated to both a six-speed automatic and six-speed manual. The manual is no longer available with the 3.6-liter, however.

The 2012 CTS’s standard-equipment list sees Bluetooth added to all models and a blind-spot monitoring system to the coupe (good thing, because the two-door’s rakish roofline and wide C-pillars make for huge blind spots). A new Touring package is available with either engine and with any body style, and adds a dark-finish grille, metal pedal covers, dark wood trim, and V-style suede stuff covering the steering wheel, shift knob, and seat inserts. Polished 19-inch wheels and Recaro seats—disliked by most of us for feeling overstuffed and for rocking back and forth under braking and acceleration—come with 3.6-liter Touring models, while 3.0-liter examples get pearl-nickel-finished 18s and the regular seats, albeit now sueded. Sedan and wagon buyers who spec the pack get an extra-special bonus: chrome exterior door handles.
The line-wide cosmetic changes are less extensive. The grille sees new finishes and a revised Caddy wreath with “sharper colors,” and its mesh insert is flusher with the frame. That’s it.
The 2012 CTS sedan, coupe, and wagon go on sale at the end of this summer.

2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe. If we had to describe our Black Raven with Ebony leather interior CTS Coupe's aesthetic, we'd call it the Cadillac of Batmobiles...or the Batmobile of Cadillacs. Either way, it's an imposing, low-slung bit of kit. From the A-pillar forward, the CTS Coupe is fairly similar to the sedan, punctuated by large prismatic adaptive headlamps and a wide pentagonal chrome grill. It relies on angles and hard edges for its character rather than smooth curves we've come to expect from modern vehicular design.
From the B-pillar to the rear bumper, the CTS Coupe distinguishes itself from its four-door stablemate with swept roofline and rear glass so steeply raked that you'd be forgiven if you mistook the coupe for a liftback. The coupe's profile is so distinct with its thick C-pillars and aggressive angles created by the side windows that it is able to make due without superfluous creases and side strakes that you find on the sides of many modern cars.
To emphasize the coupe's slab-sidedness, Cadillac's designers and engineers have even figured out how to go handle-free on the doors. Instead of the standard lift-and-pull door handles, the CTS Coupe has a finger-size opening where the door meets the body; behind it hides a button that activates the standard smart key entry system. The result both looks and feels quite slick, but did lead to quite a few fingerprints on the Coupe's black paint from confused passengers. Inside the cabin, the handle-free theme is repeated with small thumb buttons on the doors that trigger the doors' opening. In the event of an emergency (such as a dead battery), the CTS Coupe can still be opened from the inside with a pair of clearly marked emergency handles in the foot wells.
Any doubts of the angular coupe's sexiness were immediately dashed as we pulled the CTS out of the CNET garage. Everywhere we went during our testing we were met with upturned thumbs and stretched necks from fellow motorists and passersby. This is definitely a vehicle that makes a good first impression.
Although we'd no doubt be more impressed with the CTS-V's 556-horsepower supercharged V-8 under the hood, our standard CTS' 3.6-liter, direct-injected V-6's 304 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque was more than adequate for the sort of quick squirts of power necessary for on-ramp merges and stoplight shootouts. Torque flows through a six-speed automatic gearbox with sport and manual shift modes before reaching the road via the rear or all four custom wheels; ours was a rear-wheel-driven model.
A $2,090 Performance package adds steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters to the mix--although we hesitate to call the low-profile buttons "paddles"--as well as 19-inch wheels with summer tires, and an upgraded cooling system, suspension components, and brakes. Choosing the Performance package also unlocks the ability to choose a six-speed manual transmission that knocks $1,300 off of the bottom line--an option that, as enthusiasts, we'd very seriously consider.
While driving the CTS Coupe, we were constantly reminded of another GM sports coupe, the V-6 Chevrolet Camaro. It's no surprise, the coupes are about the same size and feature similar power trains based on the same 3.6-liter engine. The Cadillac felt less sharp than we remember the Camaro being, but that's to be expected. The CTS is slightly larger than the Camaro, with a longer wheelbase and carrying about 200 more pounds of comfort around at all times.
Even with the performance package, the coupe is a bit too soft to be counted among the ranks of true sports cars. The six-speed automatic transmission's shifts were a bit rubbery for the constant up and downshifting required by our favorite twisty mountain roads, and the Cadillac's sport-tuned suspension was still a tad soft for our sport driving tastes. We were, however, still impressed with the transmission's willingness to downshift as we braked in preparation for a turn; it may not have exactly been able to run with a true sports car, but the CTS Coupe is definitely willing.
The extra comfort and increased track and wheelbase come into their own during highway blasts and around the more relaxed sweeping turns of Northern California's wine country, where the Cadillac felt planted and sure of itself. The coupe's suspension insulated our ears from road noise and our spines from most bumps, but at no point isolated us from the road, which is exactly what we like in a luxury sports coupe.

The SRX is Cadillac's entry in the competitive mid-size luxury SUV market that includes competitors such as the Lexus RX350, Lincoln MKX, BMW X5 and Mercedes ML-Class. First introduced in 2004, the SRX was completely redesigned for the 2010 model year onward. The SRX is based on GM's Theta Premium platform -- an enhanced version of the regular Theta architecture, which forms the basis for the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and 2010 GMC Terrain.
Power comes from either a 3.0-liter VVT E85 V6 with direct-injection, or a 2.8-liter Turbocharged V6. The 3.0 delivers 260 horsepower at 6950 rpm and 221 pound-feet of torque at 5600 rpm, while the smaller turbocharged mill cranks out 300 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 295 pound-feet of torque at 1850 rpm. Both come equipped with a standard Hydra-Matic 6T70 six-speed automatic. The three-liter E85 unit delivers 5 horsepower more than its predecessor, while offering a 10 to 15 percent improvement in fuel economy, GM claims.

The new SRX will be offered with a choice of either front-wheel-drive or AWD. The two entry-level trim levels come with 18-inch wheels, while the top two trim levels feature 20-inch wheels. If entry-level luxury is enough for you, than the leatherette found in the base SRX may do the trick. If you are in search of high luxury, then the top three trim levels are likely more appropriate for you, as they all feature real leather and more advanced features such as keyless entry, navigation and a reverse camera with an LCD screen.
"The 2010 [and beyond] SRX will deliver excellent, balanced driving dynamics in all types of weather," said Bob Reuter, global vehicle chief engineer. "The all-wheel-drive system with electronic limited slip effectively transfers torque not only from front to rear, but also along the rear axle. This system sets a new benchmark for all all-wheel-drive systems, giving the driver control and confidence on any road surface."

Traction control is taken a step further on AWD models with the rear eLSD. In icy or wet conditions, the system can transfer up to 100 percent of torque to the wheel that has more grip. The eLSD also gives the driver enhanced control when cornering hard or completing a high-speed maneuver, by momentarily applying more or less torque to either of the wheels to help the rear of the vehicle more closely follow the direction of the front wheels.

GENEVA–Carmakers showed off their leanest, greenest mass-market models Thursday in anticipation of stricter European emissions controls as the Geneva International Motor Show opened its doors to the public.

A host of small cars are celebrating their debut in Geneva, including production versions of Ford Motor Co.'s new, fuel-stingy Fiesta and Toyota Motor Corp.'s three-seater iQ, and a concept version of Fiat's 500 Aria. All three boast carbon dioxide emissions of under 100 grams per kilometer, which will help those manufacturers beat an EU proposal for a fleet average of 130 grams by 2012.

Environment ministers from the 27-nation bloc – the world's biggest consumer market with 490 million people – met in Brussels earlier this week to discuss the plan, which has ruffled feathers among Europe's large car-producing nations such as Germany.

The environmental group Greenpeace says even tighter emissions targets than those in the EU proposal are needed if climate change is to be reigned in.

About 20 activists protested at the show on Thursday morning, demanding that automakers rethink what makes a good car and calling for average fleet emissions to be limited to 120 grams per kilometer by 2012, and 80 grams by 2020.

The Geneva show is traditionally regarded as the most level playing field for carmakers because Switzerland lacks its own industry.

Europeans will get their first glimpse of Indian manufacturer Tata's Nano, hailed as the world's cheapest car and due to begin rolling off the production line by the end of the year. The pint-sized five-seater will cost $2,500 plus tax and delivery, but will initially only be available in India while Tata works on improving the car's emissions ratio and safety features.

Chevrolet too will be appealing to Europeans accustomed to driving smaller vehicles than their trans-Atlantic cousins.

General Motor Corp.'s top-selling brand is unveiling a three-door version of the Aveo, which debuted in Europe at last year's IAA exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany, with a five-door model.

One of the loopholes to the emissions proposal currently being discussed in Brussels lets carmakers pool their fleets with those of companies producing more efficient vehicles.

Companies that exceed the limit would face stiff fines starting at 20 euros ($30) per gram per kilometer, multiplied by the number of cars sold, rising to 95 euros ($144) by 2015. If automakers pass this cost on to consumers it would add hundreds of euros (dollars) to the price of a car.

Low-volume manufacturers producing fewer than 10,000 vehicles a year would be exempt, but major players such as BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen would have to team up with greener carmakers or improve their own fleet if they want to continue selling high-powered SUVs and sports cars in Europe.

The EU proposal, even if it is watered down before being agreed upon, has set automakers fine-tuning their product range to reduce emission levels as much as possible.

Moves by several large cities to follow London's lead in charging owners of gas-guzzling vehicles a daily fee to enter the city have also spooked manufacturers and given them a further incentive to reduce emissions.

London mayor Ken Livingstone last year raised the daily charge to 25 pounds ($49) for cars that produce more than 225 grams of CO2 per kilometer, while those that produce less than 120 grams per kilometer enter free of charge.

Matthias Wissmann, head of the German auto industry group VDA, has accused Livingstone of appealing to "social envy" rather than pursuing a sound environmental goal.

Almost every major manufacturer in Geneva is showing off hybrid versions that use electricity or hydrogen in addition to conventional fuels. Lighter materials, electricity-generating brakes and even solar panels will be on show by the 260 exhibitors.

No single technology has yet emerged as the definitive way of reducing emissions, but manufacturers including General Motors and Daimler have put their weight behind developing more efficient lithium-ion batteries for use in hybrid vehicles. The German carmaker said its Mercedes-Benz flagship S-class luxury sedan will be available in a gas-electricity hybrid version next year.

Martin Lloyd of Greenpeace, who toured the show before its official opening, accused carmakers of "greenwashing" their industry with a few headline-grabbing eco models while continuing to sell heavier, faster and less efficient vehicles.

"The industry knows what it has to do and it has the technology to do it," Lloyd said.

The brutal killing has triggered a flood of condemnation from Indian industry officials.

They also fear it could have repercussions on India's drive to lure foreign investment -- especially after the labour minister appeared to justify the attack, calling it a "warning for management" to treat workers with compassion.

"Nothing in the world that can justify lynching of any person and no dispute can be settled by murdering an adversary," said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, president of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

The death of Chaudhary, victim of a long-running labour dispute over pay and other issues, has thrown an unwelcome spotlight on the difficulties of doing business in India as the still heavily agrarian nation transforms from farms to factories, industrial parks and enterprise zones.

The Italian embassy said threats to the plant "had been repeatedly brought to the attention of the competent Indian authorities" but nothing was done.

India already has enough investment horror stories without any more bad publicity.

Observers cite a slew of examples -- chiefly, the violent land row pitting farmers against Tata Motors that looks set to force the auto giant to pull out of West Bengal state, where it was due to roll out the world's cheapest car.

The events in West Bengal "will unleash fear and uncertainty in investors -- Indian or foreign," N.R Narayana Murthy, chairman of Infosys, India's second-biggest outsourcer, commented recently.

The row embroiling the Tata Group has sparked concern among Indian firms because the Tata Group is regarded as one of the country's most socially responsible due to its raft of social programmes.

Other mega projects around the country like South Korean steel giant Posco's 12-billion-dollar steel-and-power plant in eastern Orissa state have been stalled by a mix of land acquisition and environmental disputes.

And British-listed Vedanta Resources' proposal to mine bauxite to feed a 900-million-dollar aluminium refinery, also in Orissa, has come up against stiff opposition from tribals who say the company is building on sacred land.

There have also been deadly clashes over India's plans for Special Economic Zones, touted by the government as a way to woo foreign investors and spur economic growth and job creation.

"Indian society is passing through a revolutionary kind of situation where every section of the community is seeking to express their voice," said T.K. Bhaumik, economic advisor to Indian industry lobby Assocham.

"It's democracy to the boiling point," he said.

Still, India looks set to remain the world's second most preferred global location for foreign investment behind China, at least for the next couple of years, according to the latest UN World Investment Report, released last week.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows will continue to be robust despite the global financial crisis expected to impact economies across the world, the report forecast.

India expects to draw 35 billion dollars in FDI in this financial year.

"Investors are attracted by India because of the spurt in economic growth -- averaging 8.8 percent in the last five years -- and the continuing strong growth prospects," while economic expansion globally slows sharply, said Deepak Lalwani, India director at London's Astaire & Partners.

In essence, the HUV is a shelter on wheels designed for the needs of homeless people living on the street.

To help understand the daily trials a homeless person undergoes, Mills went unshaven for two weeks, slept in a small trailer in the cold and then on his apartment's hard floor for a week.

The HUV is constructed simply and consists of a plywood base, four wheels and a thin metal frame on which the PVC canopy is mounted.

Though easily portable, the HUV offers protection from the elements while being moved and allows its owner to lie down in relative comfort, shelter and privacy. It also provides storage.

Mills is aware that the design could be seen as an insult to homeless people and acknowledges that its $900 (about £485) of components is outside the scope of someone living on the streets: "This vehicle is by no means a cure for homelessness but rather a concept piece that I have created to explore the issue."
